Harvey Grant Obituary

Harvey Franklin Grant passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024.

Harvey will be remembered for his intelligence, integrity, work ethic, love of learning, progressive politics, charitable giving, stubbornness and eccentricity. He loved reading, traveling the world, and time with his grandchildren.

Harvey was born to Simon and Mildred, a Jewish family in Milwaukee, just as the stock market crash of 1929 kicked off the Great Depression. He and his younger brother Armand often told stories of their snowy life in the Midwest. Harvey met Annabelle, the love of his life, at age 14 while vacationing in Marquette, Michigan. Both families moved to California in the early 50's, and Harvey had the good sense to pursue and marry her.

Harvey had an aptitude for both math and writing, majoring in engineering at University of Wisconsin and then UCLA. In 1951, Harvey was accepted to UCLA's first law school class, graduating #2 in his class. He would have been a stellar partner at any "downtown" LA law firm, but at the time, Jews were not welcome. So Harvey became a CPA and joined an accounting firm, where he met fellow CPA/lawyer Alan Caditz. Together, over a 60-year partnership, they were among the pioneering lawyers who started their own thriving Westside firms. Harvey practiced law tirelessly, providing sophisticated tax, business, and estates advice. His practice grew as Clients spread the word about the value of Dad's advice. Harvey and Allen also proved astute investors, creating a highly successful investment partnership.

Harvey and Annabelle moved to a tiny Hollywood apartment and had Susan in 1954. When Annabelle became pregnant with David, they bought a small, $13,000 home in North Hollywood. The family grew to 5 with the birth of Sari in 1957 and in 1968 moved to the beautiful Studio City home Harvey lived in for the rest of his life.

Annabelle passed away in 2003 after a long illness. Harvey showed his devotion by becoming so immersed in her care that her doctors began to see Dad as the most informed member of the treatment team -- he could have easily passed the medical board exams.

Harvey loved his role as grandfather to Jeffrey, Stacey, Hayley, Morgan, Jake, Molly and Kara, and as great-grandfather to Andrew, Emma and Beau.

All of us love him and will miss him. In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to Dad's favorite charity, The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles.
