Joyce L. August

Northampton, MA - Joyce L. August (nee Hansher), 83, of Northampton, MA passed away on October 7th, 2023 after a short illness. Joyce is survived by her daughter, Deborah August and her partner Jason Bushey of Easthampton and her son, Jonathan of Northampton, MA. She is predeceased by her first husband, Howard August and her second husband, Herbert August both from Northampton, MA.

Joyce was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 15th, 1940, the Daughter of Irving and Pearl Hansher.

Joyce graduated from Washington High School in Milwaukee, WI in 1958 and then studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Joyce operated the well-known seafood restaurant, "The Original Jack August's" House of Seafood, in Northampton, MA, with her Husband Howard August until his passing. Joyce was a prominent business woman in the Northampton community while running Jack August's. She sponsored a little league baseball team when her son, Jonathan was playing and she was a long-time presence at the Morgan Horse Show in Northampton. She greatly enjoyed participating in the Taste of Northampton that showcased her restaurant and allowed her to meet and spend time with people in the community. One of her favorite things was socializing and welcoming new and longtime customers while they dined, picked up their take-out orders, or fresh fish. She knew her customers by name and their orders. She continued to run the restaurant with her husband, Herb until it closed in 1992.

Before she retired and during retirement she always enjoyed antiquing, traveling with her cousins, visiting with family and friends and having her dog by her side.

She was a brilliant, dynamic, beautiful woman who will always be remembered and greatly missed by her friends, family and all who knew her.

In addition to her children, Joyce is survived by her brothers David (Adriane) and Steven (Karen) Hansher of Milwaukee, WI and numerous beloved nieces and nephews, their children, cousins and friends.

She was a member of Congregation B'nai Israel and a lifetime member of Hadassah.
