Herbert Siegel - Class Of 1955

Herbert L. Siegel Obituary

February 27, 1938 - August 16, 2016 Herb Siegel passed away peacefully at home in Mt. Washington on August 16. He was a special person, intelligent, kind, generous, a mischievous maker of bad puns, lively and passionate about intellectual pursuits and social justice. Herb was deeply loved by all his family and many friends. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he moved to California after high school. He met his wife, Suzanne, on a blind date at UC Berkeley summer session, and they have been best friends for 56 years. As soon as he graduated from UC Berkeley as a math major in 1962, he and Suzanne joined the Peace Corps, serving as teachers in Ethiopia for two years. Returning to the United States, he obtained a M.A. in math and started his 40-year career as a computer programmer. A man of many accomplishments, he worked on patient identification systems for L.A. County Hospital and tracking for Registrar of Voters. He developed navigation strategies for the Voyager mission and other Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) projects. In the 1970s, he designed and built the very first multiprocessor computer. With several friends, he started Action Computer Enterprise (ACE) growing from a garage start up to a company of more than 30 employees. He returned to JPL in the 90s working on landsat imaging until his retirement. He had a wide range of interests from reading and discussing politics, economics, history, science, quantum mechanics, to riding his bicycle, dancing, working jigsaw puzzles, playing kazoo and guitar. A great Dad to Thomas (Sara), Rachel (Rick) and Benny; Grandpa to Alec, Marjourie and Ervin; survived by his sister Barbara Farkas, nephew Steven Farkas (Susan), niece Marilyn Pilcher (Scott), cousins, great nieces and nephews. He filled our hearts, and his passing will leave an empty space.
