Ruth Purdy Hansen, 84, passed away on February 3, 2014, in El Dorado Hills, California. She died of a cardiac arrest. Her final resting place is with her beloved husband and soul mate, Alan Ray Hansen, in Provo, Utah. Ruth was born on August 20, 1929, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was the youngest child of three born to Victor William Purdy and Rhina Anna Steins. Ruth is survived by her children and their spouses, Lisa and Scott Garrett, David and MaryAnn Hansen, Kyle and Marianne Hansen, Janet and Dave Thomason, and Kala and Don Dean; 17 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. The love of her life was Alan Ray Hansen. She saw him on her very first day at BYU, in French class, fall semester 1947. She talked of how they started looking at each other right away. Their first date was throwing rocks at Utah Lake. They were married July 25, 1951. Ruth graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Hospital Dietetics, with a minor in Chemistry, from Brigham Young in 1950. After having children, she later earned a teaching credential and worked as a substitute school teacher for one year in Billings, Montana. Ruth loved music. She developed as an exceptional accompanist playing the piano and organ, for church services, weddings, and funerals. Ruth was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served as a teacher, ward and temple organist and temple ordinance worker. She has said," I know I'll be involved in music in the next life. That's a very happy thought." Some of her favorite quotes: "Treat everyone with kindness and respect and that's how you will be treated." "Silence is golden." "Get a good education." "Marry the right person." and "Be kindly in all that you do." In her younger days, Ruth loved to run, swim, ride a bike, talk long walks around with neighborhood with dad; hike with grandkids to the World's Biggest Aspen and to Mt. Royal in Frisco; play badminton; and challenge her sons-in-law to a rousing game of ping-pong. Ruth will forever be remembered for her cheerful disposition, her love of music, and her hard-working hands as they served her family and those around her and her devoted love of her husband and family. A granddaughter wrote: Grandma was a top notch lady 100% of the time. She was smart, opinionated, happy, consistent, serving engaging, interested, supportive, and complimentary, determined, focused, and loving. She taught me as a 9 year old to not come out of your room until you're ready for the day and when you do, get to work!" Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at the Walker Sanderson Tribute Center, 85 East 300 South, Provo, Utah.
