Leonard A. Widen

Milwaukee - Leonard A. Widen, longtime Milwaukee architect, died peacefully Tuesday morning, March 1st at the age of 93. Loving husband of Marlene Crupi Widen. He is survived by his wife and children Larry Widen and Laurie Glazer, son-in-law David Glazer, grandchildren Emily Widen (Chris Reding), Joe Widen, Ian Glazer, Dr. Joshua Glazer (Tiffany), Dr. Meghan Glazer Williams (Nate), and Sarah Glazer McNeilly (Adam). Len is also the great grandfather of Audrey & Sawyer McNeilly, Maevyn & Reuben Glazer and Norah Williams. Leonard loved his family dearly. He is also survived by a number of other family members and friends. He was a 1947 graduate of Washington High School. He then graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Architecture in June 1953. Len immediately joined the prestigious Milwaukee architectural firm of Grassold, Johnson, Wagner and Isley, later becoming a name partner in the firm. He was an area pioneer in the design of facilities for individuals with disabilities. He supervised the creation and building of Curative Workshop on the County Grounds. Len was also dedicated to promoting continuing education within his profession. During his career he specialized in designs for churches, educational centers and hospitals across the state. Len was instrumental in assisting minority contractors and workers gain access to gainful employment within the industry. Len was a Sunday school teacher, youth leader and council member at Reformation Lutheran Church for five decades. He also served on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and was awarded the Certificate of Life Membership for his years of service. With his wife he was very involved in the efforts to preserve the legacy of Milwaukee Downer College at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. He also served as president of the Outrigger Beach Club board of directors in Ormond Beach, Florida for 25 years. Len was an avid movie and music fan his entire life. He loved opera and attending the theater. Len also enjoyed tennis, skiing and swimming.
