Nancy Ann Meiling

Nancy Ann Meiling died peacefully and naturally at the age of 90 on May 10, 2017 at her home in Oak Park Place, Wauwatosa. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert E. “Bob” Meiling. She loved and is survived by her children Dean (Madylon) Meiling, Abbe (Jerry Ward) Meiling, Mark (Sandra Kooi) Meiling and Susan (Alan Ames) Meiling. She is the proud grandmother of Teal (Graham), Tresca (Patrick), Ira, Schuyler, Rhys, Nathan and Raji; and great grandmother of Samara. Her dear sister Doris Epstein and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Marvin (Barbara) Meiling. Her close cousin Phyllis (Ken) Hanson, cherished nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends.

Nancy was born in Milwaukee on May 31, 1926. Her parents, Gertrude and Leo Wright, and her sister, Doris, lived on the east side of Milwaukee where she graduated from Washington High School, and where she met her future husband Robert Meiling. They were married in 1946 and raised a family of four children in West Allis. Life was rich in the Meiling household. Nancy’s artistic talents, passion for learning and teaching, and general interest in people and community involved her in many organizations. When she was involved, it usually resulted in leadership roles from the PTA, Mt. Hope Lutheran Church, Wisconsin Handweavers, to list a few.

Nancy’s weaving interests led her to her Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee in 1972. She taught weaving to adults in the greater Milwaukee area and developed many life long friendships with fellow weavers.

Nancy and her husband Bob traveled through Europe, China, Middle East, Africa, United States and Canada. Many of their closest friends joined them on these journeys.

Nancy was known for and stood up for her beliefs and causes, which included education (volunteering to teach reading and read with grade school children for years) and the environment. She was a role model for her children and others to live healthy independent lives, to give back to the community, and to never miss an opportunity to gather with family and friends.

We acknowledge and celebrate the “top notch” people in several organizations who enriched and assisted Nancy and her family in these last months. Oak Park Place; Touching Hearts at Home; Wellqor; and Allay Home and Hospice.

A Memorial Service celebrating Nancy’s life will be held on Saturday, May 27, at 11:00 am, at Mount Hope Lutheran Church, 8633 W. Becher Street, West Allis, WI 53227, family will greet friends at a reception following the service. Interment at Wisconsin Memorial Park Cemetery will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Nancy’s name may be made to Mount Hope Lutheran Church for the Hope Closet and Hope Pantry.
