Donald A. LeMay

Donald A. LeMay, age 95, passed peacefully on Sunday November 22, 2020 at The Community Living Center’s Green House on the Zablocki Medical Center campus in Milwaukee.

He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Marie, as well as 8 of his 10 younger siblings. He is survived by brothers, Dave and Mike, children Don, Dean and Yvonne Szatkowski, as well as 4 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and dozens of nieces and nephews.

Don was born in Milwaukee on March 24th 1925, attended Washington High School, graduating in 1943, and enlisted in the U. S. Army not long after his graduation. He served during WWII as a radio operator in field artillery from 1944 to 1946 as staff sergeant. He was honorably discharged having earned a Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, 2 Overseas Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal, and 30 Caliber Carbine Expert designation.

Don was married to Connie (nee Semrau) for 36 years raising their 3 children. He later married Betty (nee Bertelson) and helped raise her 2 sons in Racine.

Don was a self-taught musician on accordion and key-board. He lead his own combos of 3 to 5 members for 6 decades entertaining audiences large and small in many top venues around southeast Wisconsin, as well as 3 seasons on the Milwaukee Clipper, weddings, corporate events, and family celebrations.

He founded and managed the Northwest Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee in the mid-50’s, selling it in the late 60’s.

In his leisure time Don enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, sheepshead, the Brewers, the Packers, drawing and painting, horseback riding, crossword puzzles, parachuting, and Jeopardy.

In 1986 Don competed regionally in the Veterans Music Festival winning a trip to Washington D. C. where his solo Musical Comedy Routine took 1st place in the nation.

The family wishes to thank the V. A. staff at both building #43 and #46 for their exceptional care and love they provided to Don for more than 20 years.
