In Memory

Sherma Cornelius

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Sherma.

She passed away peacefully, Saturday, 10/17/2020 at the age of 97.

Sherma was the best mom ever to her son (preceded in death), Michael (Victoria) and daughter, Tamara.  Hero and proud grandmother of Curt (Katy Groh), Erek (Casey), Evan (Ana Chinchillas) Pochert and Jason Cornelius. Sweet and fortunate great-grandmother to Aidan, Riley, Sonny and Evanna, as well as bonus great-grandchildren, Elle, Vivi, Dazia, and Erik.

Sherma was the youngest of 10 children. She graduated in education from ISNU and avidly followed the Redbirds teams.  She received her MS from UWM and was a Phi Beta Kappa member.

Sherma enjoyed over 30+years of employment with Milwaukee Public Schools, serving as teacher, coach, administrative assistant, principal and guidance director.  Education was very important to her and she positively impacted many high school/college students.

She rooted for the Chicago Cubs and the Milwaukee Brewers (figure that one out). Packer Backer, without question.

Keeping physically fit her entire life, she was a highly ranked bowler and golfer, and threw a mean fast ball.  Walking was her activity in her later years.

Card games (famously teaching her 5yr old grandsons to play poker), scrabble contests, bingo, crocheting, reading, betting on the horses and volunteering were some of her favorite pastimes.

Bridge clubs kept her busy almost every day in her retirement.  She enjoyed going to breakfast with “the boys” on Wednesdays.  Her response when asked to participate in many activities was a quick, “Sure!”  Her artistic, creative talent was awakened during her assisted living residence.

Many delicious meals and special recipes were prepared for holidays, or “just because” or “grandma will you make us…” requests.

Sherma witnessed many incredible and unimaginable changes in her world and to our world in her almost 100 years of living.

She lived a full and rich life, no regrets, leaving her stamp with family, friends, students and community of strong values in friendship, positivity, understanding, humor, generosity and love.

She will be dearly missed, we will have good, no, great memories of her beautiful spirit in our hearts and lives, forever.

A short/safe visit is encouraged due to COVID restrictions.

Visitation to be held at Wisconsin Memorial Park – Chapel of the Flowers, 13235 West Capitol Drive, Brookfield, Wisconsin, on Saturday, October 24, 2020, from 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM. Service at 1:30 PM. Burial to follow.

Memorials appreciated, in her name, to West Suburban YMCA educational programs.
