Eldon Schneller

Eldon Schneller taught English at WHS for 40 years and was much loved.  People may not be aware that on 1 May 1977 he was murdered in a robbery attempt.

from Edward Susterich '52 "?Eldon Schneller was my home room teacher.  Though he did not teach the English classes that I had, I knew that he was well regarded by all.

He was a great teacher of English and life itself. He gave us projects to to do in class that broadened our outlook on subjects. He supported two churchs in our area and I was appauled when he was murdered by a young punk.   By Stan Lesniak

William A Wines (1963)

Mr. Schneller was a gentle and good man.  I was fortunate to be a student in his American Literature class my junior year.  Mr. Schneller saw some talent in my writing and encouraged me - as he did many other students.  The year was 1961-62.  When I applied to college in the fall of 1962, he sent an unsolicited letter of recommendation that resulted in Northwestern University's English Department waiving freshman English and opening all its classes to me.  The result -  for which I was remiss in not thanking him adequately and promptly - was a better education.  He did thoughtful and genuine favors for students almost reflexively.  He was one of the people who inspired me to walk away from a lucrative law practice to teach college students for 37 years.  The irony of this good man who loved the youth of Milwaukee being murdered by teenagers on leave from juvenile detention facilities runs deep.  "Good night, sweet prince..."
