I remember silk screening some kind of head band for that production.  Mr Routt encouraged me to study art in college , which I did. Later on I taught art at all levels. My only regret was that I never truly let Mr Routt know how grateful I was for his support of my little paintings and drawings...

Ron Routt was a visionary. We did so much in his class...unlike some of the other so called art teachers. He had so many great ideas, even with budget cuts to the art department. He was always encouraging and fun. I remember working on the stage crew for "The Boyfriend". It was so much fun...hard work but fun. Now he is gone as is my painting buddy Sarah Larsen.  Ron Routt is the reason I persued an art degree at UWM.He emboddied the true meaning of being a "teacher". His memory lives on in all of us that were fortunate to have been one of his students.

I had the privilege of having Mr. Routt through all four years at WHS.  I spent many hours working in his class during study halls and lunch hours.  He had a way of relating to students and encouraging them to work hard at whatever they did whether it was art related or not.  When budgets did not allow for supplies he would donate from his personal studio.  It was obvious he loved teaching.  Definitely one of the teachers I will always remember.  Thank you Mr. Routt!

Mr Routt was not only a great teacher to me but also a father figure. I think back to the talks we had about me not wearing the short skirts, the makeup too heavy, and my flirting with the boys. I was on cheerleading and pom poms, and was helping bring back the color guard when I left. I did more managing than performing because I could learn and teach the routines but had problem performing them. When I moved to Cali, I would call him every month, till the month he died. I called the day after he had passed. I still remember his brother telling me to sit down and telling me what had happen and the concern he had for how I was talking the news. Mr Routt set me up on a date with his nefew once. Nice guy, treated me like a lady. We went to dinner at this really nice little place on the Eastside and and the to the Art museum. Well that is when I learned he did not have any taste in real art like his uncle. I miss Mr Routt ever day.

I remember Mr. Routt as my cheerleader coach.  I was bullheaded and used to give him a difficult time, but he taught me alot.    R.I.P.  Mr. Routt.

WELL, WHAT CAN I SAY THAT HASN'T ALREADY BEEN SAID! MR.ROUTT WAS A MENTOR,TEACHER, COACH, BUT MOST OF ALL A FRIEND. WHEN HE WASN'T RUNNING AROUND GETTING THINGS READY FOR A PLAY,PEP RALLY OR ART DISPLAYS, HE WAS WIPING AWAY TEARS,GIVING YOU A HUG, OR HIS FATHERLY ADVISE. HE WAS ALWAYS WILLING TO LEAD A HAND TO HIS STUDENTS.

I REMEMBER ONE DAY WHEN WE WERE LEARNING A NEW ROUTINE, AND THE WAY WE STARTED TO MOVE. HE STOPPED THE MUSIC AND SAID " THIS IS NOT A HOOTCHIE CLUB THIS IS A SCHOOL WHERE WE SHOW PEOPLE HOW TO ENJOY MOVEMENTS AND RESPECT OURSELVES AS WOMEN. SO, NO HOOTCHIE COOTCHIE DANCING IN MY SQUAD" THE WAY HE MOVED MADE US ALL LAUGH @ HIM AND HE MADE US PROMISE THAT WE WOULDN'T.

I AM NOW SAYING THE SAME THINGS TO MY OWN KIDS AND NIECES AND NEPHEWS. FUNNY HOW WORDS FROM 1 PERSON STAY WITH U FOREVER.

MR ROUTT WHERE EVER U R IN HEAVEN YOU MAKE SURE UR PAINTING AND DANCING WITH ALL UR BEAUTIFUL COLORS. WE WILL SEE EACH OTHER ON THE OTHERSIDE. "REST IN PEACE MY DEAR FRIEND"

I didn't know Ron real well from school, having graduated in 1967.  But, he lived two doors away from us on Grant Blvd.later.  He was a great friend and a wonderful neighbor.  I have always missed him very much.

I remember Mr. Routt very fondly. He was so encouraging and as a result I designed and helped to paint the back drop for our Winter Concert. (The East wind with lotsa snow flakes).  I also helped on The Boyfriend and remember the comments Leroy Nienow made about his (Ron's) knock on the head. We were all so concerned. Great memories. So saddened to hear of his passing.

Ron Routt was more than my art and stagecrafts teacher. He hired me to work for him at the now defunct Melody Top Theatre in the box office. With his encouragement, I also worked as an apprentice, building sets, seaerching out props and creating costumes. Ron was my mentor and my friend. Mondays were "dark nights" at the theatre. Usually it was just the two of us in the box office until closing at 9 pm. No rehearsals, very little activity in the shop. And very dark. Sometimes downright creepy. I used to make him walk me to back buildings where the bathrooms were. That area was not built up like today. And the box office was rarely busy. Ron brought his stereo to the box office at the beginning of summer, with a huge stack of musical theatre recordings. Shows I had never heard of.  Off Broadway, Off-Off-Broadway, European shows. Sometimes I hated seeing 9:00!

I worked for Melody Top all year, moving to their downtown office. Ron went back to teaching school and then would appear again in early Spring to set up the box office. As I grew older and juggled school with the work, I sometimes found myself arguing with Ron over how things were done. I wasn't a kid anymore and he wasn't my teacher. Our producer yelled at us both one day, saying we sounded like an old married couple. Ron stomped put of the box office and threw something in my direction, saying he would rather put pins in his eyes! I burst out laughing, which only made him madder. I still use his expression to this day because it is so outrageous. The next day he brought flowers from his garden, saying they were not for me, but his partner Roy told him to bring them in. A few years later he was gone from the box office and was focusing more on his art for the Lakefront Arts Festival. I missed him, but we all went our separate ways eventually, The theatre changed a lot and then closed. I lost touch with Ron and when I heard he had died I felt terribly sad because I let this wonderful person slip from my life. He gave me opportunities I would not have had and pointed me in a direction I badly needed. He taught me so many things and I neverreally thanked him. Hopefully he is looking over my shoulder like he did at the theatre when I typed up season ticket orders, He was like a kid. He did it because he was bored and he knew it drove me crazy! Thank you Ron Routt!
