Leigh Bryant Zarse

Leigh peacefully”…slipped the surly bonds of earth…” (J.G. Magee) on June 28, 2016. Leigh was born in Milwaukee on Sept. 26, 1930 to Alfred H. and Cecile (Moreau) Zarse. He will be missed by his wife of 43 years Hannelore (Schilling), was preceded in death by his sister Donna Mae Jorgensen (Leif) and was a dear brother of Frederick (Elaine) Zarse, uncle of Victoria (Duffy) Swift and Keith Zarse, brother-in-law of Christel Marschner and is also survived by cousins and friends. 

Leigh graduated from Washington H.S. in 1948 and went on to UWM, Ohio State University, and the University of Illinios, Champaign Urbana, from which he graduated in 1954 with  degrees in architecture and engineering. He joined his father’s firm Zarse & Zarse Architects and became its president. He served to major in the U.S.A.F. and designed a 1,500 seat amphitheater at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. He was also a multi-instrument pilot. As architect he designed and built numerous local, state and federal buildings including 40 schools in S.E. WI, city halls for Kenosha, St. Francis and Hales Corners and the FAA and Weather Bureau Bldg. at Mitchell Field. Later he worked as a structural project engineer for Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) where he designed and built the Headquarters Office Bldg., the Jones Island Maintenance Facility, MMSD South and renovated the pumping station where Collectivo on the lake is now located. Because of these many achievements he is listed in WHO’S WHO IN AMERICA and WHO'S WHO IN THE WORLD. 

Besides flying his own airplanes, Leigh was an avid skier with Vagabond Ski & Social Club and enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife belonging to several dance clubs. Leigh was a social creature with a sunny disposition; he was kind, very generous, and helpful to his family, friends and neighbors.  

Visitation Tuesday July 5 at the FUNERAL HOME from 4:30-7:30 PM. An additional visitation will be Wednesday at ST. ANNE’S SALVATORIAN CAMPUS, 3800 N. 92nd St., Milwaukee from 10:00 AM until time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM. Private Interment.

 Suggested memorials may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Central Pacific Province or Mount Mary University.
