Phillips, Joyce Franklin Of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, died peacefully at home on January 2, 2013. Joyce N. Franklin was born in Milwaukee, October 30, 1926, to Dr. Emil and Rose (nee Peltin) Franklin. She grew up in Milwaukee's Sherman Park neighborhood, graduating from Washington High School. While attending theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison, she met Morton F. Phillips. They married in 1947. She earned her bachelor's degree from Milwaukee-Downer College. While raising her family, Joyce received a Master's degree in Vocational Rehabilitation from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and worked with Dr. Ernest Spaights for two years. For the next 25 years, she worked as a psychotherapist with great passion and humility at Mt. Sinai/Good Samaritan/Aurora Hospitals. Joyce was an unusually giving and loving person whose vivacious personality will long be remembered. Throughout her life she supported many charitable and philanthropic causes with grace and conviction. During the 1960's she was a strong supporter of human rights. She was an active member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and participated in the march in New York City for Peace in Vietnam and lobbied for civil rights in Washington, D.C. Joyce was intellectually curious - she finished the daily cross-word puzzle, constantly used the dictionary and developed a great knowledge of medical diagnoses, treatments and pharmacology. She was quite the amateur athlete - tennis, bowling and bicycling. Most recently she was an avid ballroom dancer and enjoyed taking dance lessons with her husband and attending soirees with friends. She loved the arts - music, theatre, dancing and museums - supporting Milwaukee's many civic organizations as both an audience member and a board trustee. Joyce is survived by her husband, Dr. Morton F. Phillips, her daughters Judith (Robert) Binder and Vicki L. Phillips and her son Gary Franklin Phillips; her grandchildren Emily Binder, David Binder, Rachel (Michael) Phillips Kozlowski, Jonathan Phillips and Miriam Phillips; and two great-grandchildren, Maya and Lily Kozlowski. She will be greatly missed by them, her nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be held on Friday, January 4, 2013, at 11:00 AM, at Anshai Lebowitz Cemetery, 326 S. Hawley Rd., Milwaukee.
